nanny shelly's diary: week four

Hello! I hope all is well with you.

Things in Boston are...busy. The weather was amazing again this week (with the exception of today...here comes the rain once again...boo!) All week long there were men working on the basement. The basement is the boys main play area...so we used this week to find other things to do. Thankfully we were able to be outside a lot because of the nice weather.

Earlier this week the boys and I were exploring outside and we found a turtle! We were so excited...we thought we found a dead turtle that died stuck in the mud. We dug it out with sticks and I found two perfects sticks to carry it over to the deck (no way was I going to touch the thing!) so that the boys could run inside and get their parents to show them our findings. Elizabeth came out and was impressed...then Jim came out and picked it up and said "hmmm...made in china?"

Our awesome dead turtle was a toy! Pretty silly...next time I'll check on that. :-)

One day Alex went on out of the house adventures with Dad...so Michael and I found things to entertain us (and keep him from being upset for not going to). So we made lunch together...I bet you're thinking "how did she let a two year old cook too?" Well for your information, Michael did quite well! We made mini quiche...and Michael put all of the meat and veggies in the little cups after I chopped them all up, then I poured the egg on top and we sat in front of the stove to watch as they cooked. He was so proud of himself it was so cute! And they were pretty tasty too!

Here are a few memorable happenings from the week: the boys made a huge pile of all of their toys underneath the kitchen table...then proceeded to pretend they were in a car and "drove off" with all their toys in the back of the car. Michael likes to pull my bangs over my eyes then blow them out of my face. Michael had a horrible reaction to allergies one of the days when we walked to the park...his eyes were all watery and red I felt so horrible! So Jim came and picked him up while Alex and I continued to play at the park. During "tubba time" (bath time) one night Alex got really wrinkly fingers and said "look! all of the air was let out of my fingers!" Kayleigh brought the girls over to play on Friday...I took a bunch of cute photos!

It was a pretty fun week...we have a little over two weeks before we move to Virginia! Wow...time moves fast!

Until next week...

nanny shelly's diary: week three

For starters: this week has been amazing!

The weather has been incredible here...70's and sunny! (I hear it snowed in Oregon...weird!) Alex & Michael & I have been outside a lot playing baseball & frisbee! Alex is so funny...he likes to set up his baseball tee to hit the ball, but he doesn't like to go get the balls...that's Michael & my job! So when Michael & I were playing frisbee...it wasn't okay! Alex didn't like having to go get the balls after he hit them...oh well. :)

It was a beautiful week for another park trip...only it wasn't quite as funny/ridiculous as last time. Kayleigh (another nanny in town) came over to the house with Maddy (the little girl she nanny's for) & picked up the boys & me to drive over to Southborough for a fun park hour. Michael fell in love with the seesaw...and Alex & Maddy mostly played in the ginormous sand box.

Friday Elizabeth's niece, Katie, was here. The boys call her Katalie (...?) & so we were able to have cousin time. I wasn't able to spend a whole ton of time with her...cuz Friday night I went to New York City to party with the Pope. Well...maybe I didn't quite party with the Pope (I hear he's quite the party animal though...) but I did go to New York City for the weekend. Two of my school friends (we go way back to the third grade) live in the city. I had an AMAZING time! I also fell in love with the city...I would love to live there...love, love, LOVE to live there! Who knows...

Anywho...if you wanna know more about NYC just ask...I'll tell. I hope all is well with you! Until next week...

nanny shelly's diary: week two

I have officially come to the conclusion that boys are a lot of work! I love them so much but they make my life very busy. (smiley face) I've also come to realize that the stereotypical "selective hearing" that seems to be a characteristic of many men starts at a very young age. We had lots of adventures this week...I'll share a few with you.

Elizabeth had an overnight business trip this week...so Michael, Alex, and I held down the fort together! Boy was that exhausting!! I seriously slept hard during their naps! I did have a little bit of a fright though. For those of you who aren't aware...I can be somewhat of a paranoid person. At night after putting both the boys to bed I let Knicky (the dog) in and set the house alarm. Whenever an outside door opens (when the alarms are off) there is a "beep, beep, beep" to tell you that a door was opened. This night I slept with my door open so I could hear the boys if they needed me in the night. Around mid-night I SWEAR I heard the sound of a door...without the beeps...so it was a door inside the house (but when I'm freaked out I also have a tendency to hear things...I really can be crazy). A few seconds later Knicky, who was at the bottom of the stairs started barking and then growling. I snuck into Alex's room and got him out of bed and made my way toward Michael's room to look out the window (before I press the "panic" button). I stood there to see if anyone was outside...just then a cat ran away from the front door! All this commotion over a silly cat!! So I put Alex back to bed and called Michelle to talk for a bit cuz I was seriously shaking all over.

The weather has been fairly nice lately (with the exception of the thunder/lightening/rain storms yesterday) one day it was up in the 70's! Due to the nice weather, I thought it would be a wonderful idea to put Michael in a stroller and take the boys for a walk to the park. The park was a bit farther away than I expected...but it really is quite a nice walk. On the way there we only had a few moments of fuss...Alex really doesn't like ANY bug. Once we arrived at the park the boys played with other kids for a while, we only had three rules: don't push anyone, share, and listen to Shelly. The boys did really well with the three rules, Alex even played baseball with two other little boys he met at the playground. On the way back Alex started complaining about his leg (I'm still not sure what happened...either he didn't want to walk or his legs were tired). So I tried carrying Alex in one arm while pushing the stroller with my hands...not so much. Thirty-Three pounds of boy can exhaust your arm pretty fast. So I attempted to give Alex a piggy-back-ride while pushing the stroller. Alex is not quite familiar with the concept of a piggy-back-ride so it ended up with me bent over (pretty far) with him on my back trying to push a stroller on a sidewalk...it must've been quite the site! After going on like this for a few blocks I knew it just wasn't going to work anymore...so Alex had to walk again. We all made it home in one piece thankfully.

We've been working on the concept of sharing...it's a hard one to grasp and the boys don't like that toys that aren't shared don't get to be played with. We've also been reading through "The Hobbit," Alex is really enjoying it and Michael really enjoys playing through it. Alex joined me one night after Michael went to bed, to give Elizabeth a relaxing evening, to watch "The Lady and the Tramp" on my computer...he thought that was pretty cool.

It's been quite the week. I have a growing attachment to this family...they're wonderful!

nanny shelly's diary: week one

So, Wednesday morning I flew into the Boston airport at 5:00 am (2:00 am West Coast time). My plane ride was very interesting...I attempted to get some sleep while being subjected to the very loud music of the teenage girl sitting next to me (not good music for the record). Fortunately upon arrival, I was greeted by three smiling (tired) faces: Elizabeth and Alex and Michael. After retrieving my bags we made our way to the car and on to Westborough, Massachusetts. The boys couldn't wait to show me their toys and get me downstairs (to their playroom) to play baseball. I would write more, but after three hours of sleep I wasn't quite with it...there's not much I remember. Once Jackie (the nanny right before me) arrived I went upstairs to sleep...for a few hours.

I woke up just in time to go to taekwondo with the boys. Alex did all of his kicks and hits...and even though I'm not an expert (or even a person who knows the slightest about taekwondo) in my opinion he was quite good for being four years old.

That night Alex and I sat down (after Michael went to bed) to watch "Peter Pan"...this is the conversation that followed the start of that movie:

Alex: Shelly...you see that girl?
Me: Which one? That one?
Alex: Yeah...Wendy!
Me: Yeah...I see Wendy.
Alex: I like her...I want to cozy her!
Me: (speechless)

"cozy" is the word for cuddle...very very cute...so pass it on!!

While I'm on the topic of different lingo, "fresh" is what you would say to someone who is in a bad mood, i.e.: "Stop being so fresh!" or "Why are you being so fresh?"

I was informed by a guy that I met that I pronouce "Oregon" wrong...my response: I pronouce it wrong! REALLY!? hmmm...that's a new one! :) I did laugh though...but I batched their names too. "Worcester" isn't pronouced 'wor-chest-er' like I thought it would be, it's 'woo-ster'...funny.

Thursday we had to be out of the house for a few hours in the afternoon while it was being inspected. So Jackie took us for a drive...to show me all the crazy-huge-mega-mansions. I was pretty much in awe as we drove through these neighborhoods...in Oregon all these types of homes are in gated communities! We drove by Larry Byrd's old home...it had a huge indoor basketball court that you could see through huge windows on the side. Thursday night I went over to Jackie's house after Elizabeth got home and the boys were in bed. Alex called this "Jackie and Shelly's play-date"...another chuckle that I got. Kids are so cute!

My first week has been great! I miss Oregon...but I love the whole Perrin family! The boys are great fun...and Elizabeth has been great to get to know too. I was able to meet Jim yesterday and he's also great...even though I didn't spend much time with him.

So until next week...be good!

tomato tomato

where to begin...

well i started this brilliant journey (i'm referring to the one i'm on...you know the boston one) with a short detour to orange county. so while i sit here at the long beach airport waiting for my flight i will write to tell you about my time in cali.

last thursday i bid "farewell" to my dear family (who i miss a lot if any of you are reading this) and boarded a flight headed toward los angeles. at the los angeles airport i was greeted by two smiling faces...one was my best friend michelle and the other was her roommate, kim, who is my new friend! after my long grueling flight, michelle and i headed out for a night on the town with a bunch of her "hope" buddies...including john swan who is my favorite (i love you john). we made our way to a movie theater to watch the midnight showing of "21"...and even though michelle and i were the only two people who liked the movie...everyone else was still in good spirits.

friday was michelle's last day of classes...so i was able to join the ranks of many college students (once again) and enjoy college life. we had many merry adventures over the next few days, including: beaches, caves, food, movies, southpark, and much much more.

by far my favorite part of the trip was sunday: disneyland day. we woke up very early and made our way to the happiest place on earth for a day of mickey, donald, and churros (yumm)! we were joined by two of my new favorite people: josh and bryant. we let the kids in us come out as we ran around disneyland enjoying everything. those of you who've been to disneyland...next time you go ride the canoes. it's really fun! you'll get to experience all the children in front of you who, i swear, blatantly look behind at you and give you an evil smile as they proceed to use their paddle to soak you with water. yep...that's exactly how it went, i'm sure of it! i was also privileged to be a part of the conversation where bryant explained to josh that the saying isn't "tomato potato"...i haven't laughed that hard in a while.

monday...these crazy animals wandered toward the los angeles zoo. michelle faced her fear of monkeys...with the help of me and josh. we also figured out that four dollars for ice cream is totally worth it when it's hot out and you have nothing else. that night we enjoyed amazing home cooking...and watched enlightening movies.

i guess that will pretty much bring you to me sitting here now...in an airport terminal...typing on my computer. before i go...i hope you enjoy a photo from my trip (at the top). i miss everyone back in oregon...and i'm super excited to arrive in boston soon!
